Land selection criteria
Climate Positive is careful when selecting areas to restore on behalf of members and clients. We have created a check list to ensure we choose land which is valuable for its carbon yields, habitat and biodiversity potential and opportunity for community involvement.
1. Carbon values
2. Risk of establishment
3. Landholder commitment / potential for Trust for Nature covenant
4. Extent to which the project will augment existing regional biodiversity strategies.
5. Weed cover, weed species composition, vulnerability to invasion of weeds from adjoining sites
6. Biodiversity values of the site (existing ground flora etc), possibility of colonisation of indigenous species from adjoining sites
7. Size - larger sites are better - 20 hectares plus - to concentrate planting areas and limit travel for maintenance teams
8. Shape (edge to surface area ratio)
9. Potential for site to attract additional partnership funding through CMA, DSE and others
10. Publicity potential, exposure to major roads for signage
11. Eco tourism potential - i.e. views of the ocean, accessibility to road networks, potential for forest stays as additional ongoing source of income
12. Preference for lower agricultural value land.
